In 2003, Lily, who immigrated to the United States five years ago, returned to Xindian from Los Angeles with her two daughters, Fangyi and Fang'an, to reunite with her estranged husband, Zonghui, due to her battle with breast cancer. Fangyi, struggling with Chinese language barriers, fell seriously behind in school and was jokingly referred to as the "American Girl" by her classmates. As she navigated her mother’s illness, she felt utterly powerless, yearning to return to America.
