Zhong Li (Qin Han) falls in love with a girl named Zhong Pingmei (Lin Fengjiao). However, the Hakka people have a rule that those with the same surname cannot marry. With no other option, Zhong Li leaves alone for Shenyang to further his studies. Two years later, he returns to be with Zhong Pingmei, and they elope to Shenyang, creating a small and warm family. Due to financial constraints, Zhong Li becomes a taxi driver but loses his job after abandoning a brothel madam in the wilderness. His strong sense of national pride leads him to refuse a high-paying job offered by the Japanese, causing his family to fall into poverty and hardship, with all the burden resting on the pregnant Zhong Pingmei. Later, they move to Beiping, and at the same time, Zhong Li completes his first work "Nerium Oleander," thus embarking on a long literary journey. Unfortunately, Zhong Li contracts a lung disease, requiring multiple hospitalizations and incurring countless medical expenses. However, Zhong Pingmei does not complain about her husband and instead unwaveringly supports his dreams.
