This is a modern-style drama that introduces the life and thoughts of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), who was born in Vienna and studied at Cambridge. His main interest was in exploring the nature and limits of language. The film uses the simplest black background, with all funds spent on costumes, actors, and lighting, while the composition resembles dark Enlightenment paintings. Wittgenstein appears as a small boy, depicting his repressed childhood, with his family dressed in Roman togas on screen. A series of vignettes describe his life from childhood to World War I, and ultimately to his time as a professor at Cambridge, collaborating with Bertrand Russell and John Maynard Keynes. Director Derek Jarman employs some dramatic pieces, along with imaginative little tricks, such as the appearance of a Martian dwarf, to portray Wittgenstein's aristocratic demeanor, Jewish background, and homosexual tendencies.
