The story takes place in 1950s England, where the war has caused significant damage to the city. Amidst the chaos, a woman named Vera (played by Imelda Staunton) struggles to maintain a peaceful and stable life with her husband and children. On the surface, Vera appears to be a cleaner, but a deep secret lies hidden in her heart. In her spare time, Vera assists women who become pregnant during wartime by providing illegal abortions in a surgical room arranged by her friend Lily (played by Ruth Sheen). This act is against the law in England at the time. When Reggie (played by Eddie Marsan) joins Vera's family, he brings added joy, and the wedding of Reggie and Vera's daughter Ethel (played by Alex Kelly) lights up everyone's faces with happiness. However, during the wedding, a knock on the door reveals not friendly blessings, but the arrival of the police, leading to Vera's actions being exposed to the public.
