Tony (Viggo Mortensen) is a laid-back slacker working as a waiter at a nightclub. The nightclub is set to close for a few months, but Tony's rent and living expenses won't be canceled, so his immediate priority is to find another job to fill the gap during this period. At this crucial moment, a black pianist named Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) offers to hire Tony. Don Shirley is about to embark on an eight-week tour in the South, but during that time, discrimination against black people in the South is very severe, so Tony becomes Don Shirley's driver and bodyguard. Along the way, their vastly different personalities create many conflicts between them, while the various injustices Don Shirley faces in the South cause Tony to feel deeply repulsed by racial discrimination.
