Ricky (Julian Dennison) is a very troubled young boy with a bad attitude, and no one wants to play with him, bringing endless trouble to others. Eventually, Ricky is sent to a small village surrounded by mountains due to his misbehavior, where he lives with his tough aunt Paula (Rachel House) and his intimidating uncle Hec (Sam Neill). Although Ricky initially shows great disdain for life here and attempts to escape repeatedly, Paula's care and love gradually melt the ice in his heart. For the first time, Ricky feels that being loved is a warm thing, just like the warmth of the hot water bottles his aunt prepares for him every day. However, good times are short-lived, as Aunt Paula passes away, and Ricky is to be sent back to the orphanage.
