Young and handsome American soldier Barley (Troy Garity) meets a stunning dancer at a strip club, where his companion encourages him to flirt and find out if the dancer is male or female. Being the gentleman, Barley strikes up a conversation without revealing his comrade's lewd bet, winning the affection of the transgender dancer named Adams (Lee Pace). The two fall in love at first sight and begin to date, feeling very happy together. Barley's roommate Fisher (Shawn Hatosy) is extremely jealous and constantly provokes trouble, ultimately instigating a rookie to brutally end Barley's life at the age of 22 with a baseball bat. On July 4th, America's Independence Day, Adams shines at the celebration, while Barley lies in a pool of blood in a distant apartment. When Adams learns of Barley's tragic fate after winning the crown, the grief overwhelms him to the point he cannot stand. He bends down, curling into a ball, and cries in despair, as if every part of his body that bears the trace of Barley is permeated with the pain of being brutally cut... This film is based on a true story, depicting the shocking tragedy of an American soldier who was brutally killed by his comrades due to his love for a transgender dancer. Directed by Oscar-winner Frank Pearson, the film was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Miniseries, the Emmy Award for Best Director, and the Independent Spirit Awards for Best Lead/Supporting Actor, among others.
