In 1988 Prague, cellist Luka (played by Zdenek Sverák) has long lost his job in an orchestra and can only make a living playing for a funeral home and repairing graves. This middle-aged bachelor has a certain charm with women, which he enjoys, but his difficult life forces him to go against his original intentions and enter into a sham marriage with a Soviet woman for compensation. A few days after the marriage, the Soviet woman leaves for West Germany, leaving her five-year-old son Kolya (played by Andrei Chalimon) with Luka to care for. Luka complains to Kolya in Czech, a language the boy doesn't understand, about the tyranny of Soviets, while also dealing with police investigations into the sham marriage and his mother who is hostile towards Soviets. Luka enlists several girlfriends to help look after Kolya, and gradually, the father and son develop a mutual dependence on each other. Soon, the Soviet government wants to reclaim the child, and taking advantage of the chaotic situation at the end of the 1980s, Luka runs away with Kolya... The film won the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film in 1997 and received over a dozen awards including an honorary prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1996.
