Mary (Jennifer Jones) meets a man named Giovanni (Montgomery Clift) while vacationing in Italy. The two are attracted to each other and soon become close, spending two happy days together. However, their joy is short-lived as Mary is about to leave Italy for Paris. Giovanni persuades her to stay with him, but the stubborn Mary is determined to leave, which infuriates Giovanni, leading him to hit her in anger. Sad and heartbroken, Mary prepares to board the train to Paris. Just as the train is about to leave, Giovanni appears, crossing the tracks to reach Mary despite the danger. His actions move Mary, and they reconcile. Although they miss this train, the next one will arrive soon, leaving them with less and less time.
