Dali (Viggo Mortensen) is a Frenchman born in Algeria, and he currently works as a teacher in a remote mountain school. One day, a police officer appears before Dali and hands over a bound prisoner named Mohammed (Reda Kateb), who is accused of murdering his cousin. Dali is tasked with escorting him to a nearby village for trial. This burdensome task gives Dali a headache because he knows that once Mohammed reaches the village, death awaits him. Dali is unwilling to serve as an agent of that death, but the police leave Mohammed with Dali and depart. Left with no choice, Dali must embark on the journey with Mohammed. Along the way, Dali not only has to guard against Mohammed's escape but also protect him from the attacks of the deceased's relatives.
