Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell) are great partners on stage and good friends in life. The dazzling duo attracts countless men's attention when they walk together, but they are not just pretty faces; in terms of intelligence, Lorelei and Dorothy are second to none. One day, Lorelei boards a ship to France to marry her fiancé, Gus (Elliott Reid). Onboard, they encounter a man named Gus (Tommy Noonan), who turns out to be a private detective sent by Gus's father to test Lorelei's true feelings for his son. As time goes by, Dorothy slowly falls for the kind Gus, but Lorelei clearly has her sights set on another potential "golden husband" for her good friend.
