The story takes place in Germany in 1972, where Hans (Julius Weckauf) is a chubby nine-year-old boy living in a small shop run by his grandmother. Hans's personality isn't particularly likable, but he possesses a remarkable ability to make people laugh; no matter how down someone is feeling, a few words with Hans can bring back their smile. Hans's mother, Margarete (Luise Heyer), is seriously ill, and the burden of the family rests heavily on his father. To support the family and pay for medical expenses, his father works tirelessly, gradually losing his own smile. Luckily, the women in Hans's family are very open-minded and resilient, and their presence subtly influences Hans, protecting his spirit from the harsh realities of life.
