Young Goldmund (Janis Nivona) is sent by his father to the Mariabronn Monastery to study and meets the pious monastery student Narcissus (Sabin Tambrea). Devoted to the ascetic and strict rules of life in the monastery with heart and soul, Narcissus initially inspires Goldmund to follow him. A close friendship quickly develops between the two, but the restless and pleasure-loving Goldmund soon realizes that the monastery's perspective on life does not align with his free spirit. Encouraged by Narcissus, he embarks on an adventurous journey, during which he finally encounters his great love, Lene (Henriette Confurius). Many years later, Narcissus and Goldmund meet again under dramatic circumstances...
