Payne (played by Todd Babcock) is an American doctor living in the Shanghai International Settlement. By chance, he meets the Kuomintang agent Haoming (played by Tao Zeru). Haoming, inspired by the October Revolution in his youth, once had great red ideals, but the brutality of the White Terror changed his original intentions, leading him to take up the knife to slaughter Communists. Before committing suicide, Haoming's wife sent their daughter Qiuxiu to a church school. Growing up under the influence of the Communist Jin (played by Leslie Cheung), Qiuxiu (played by Mei Ting) joins the Communist Party and pretends to be married to Jin while hiding in Shanghai to care for his severe illness. When Qiuxiu appears before Payne, he falls in love with this beautiful Chinese woman at first sight. However, upon learning about Qiuxiu and Jin’s story, he decides to help them at all costs and witnesses that romantic yet tragic red love.
