The story takes place in Connecticut, USA, in 1844. Miranda (played by Gene Tierney), born into a poor family, receives a letter from her cousin Nicholas (played by Vincent Price), who invites her to his home to act as a governess for his daughter Catherine (played by Connie Marshall). In Miranda's eyes, Nicholas's family represents the epitome of high society, so she gladly accepts the job and sets off. Shortly after arriving at the mansion, Miranda hears terrifying legends about the place. Moreover, not long after, Nicholas's wife Joanna (played by Vivienne Osborne) mysteriously dies. On the night of Joanna's death, Nicholas expresses his love for Miranda, causing her to recoil in fear. At this point, she has no idea that she has already been drawn into a terrible curse.
