As World War II was about to end, the honest Chinese commoner Yang Yufu (Fu Dalong) was rescued by the Soviet Red Army from the clutches of the Japanese. On the way to the rear, the Soviet army mistakenly enters a Japanese military camp, and after a fierce battle, Yang Yufu and female medic Naja (Anna Chernilalova) escape into the forest, where they meet the lost girl Qiu Yezi (Maeda Chie). Having been indoctrinated with militaristic ideology, Qiu Yezi is determined to kill Yang Yufu and Naja. After several close calls, Naja can no longer tolerate Qiu Yezi's actions and urges Yang Yufu to kill her, but he cannot bring himself to do it.
In the vast forest, the three people, who cannot communicate due to the language barrier, gradually develop a bond through a series of trials. Qiu Yezi realizes the absurdity of her past behavior and reveals her innocent side. However, the laughter is only temporary; the war does not forget them, and tragedy soon strikes.
