Billy (played by Jamie Bell) comes from a working-class family of coal miners in England. They participate in strikes, struggling through poverty, and believe that Billy should learn boxing like a man. Though he attends boxing classes weekly, an unexpected event leads him down a different path. Because of a small accident, Billy discovers his subconscious love for ballet, which his tough ballet teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson (played by Julie Walters), unintentionally recognizes as his exceptional talent. They hit it off, and Mrs. Wilkinson even abandons her class of girls to focus entirely on training young Billy. However, Billy's family completely misunderstands why their son has fallen for something perceived as feminine. Billy faces a painful decision amidst his family's opposition. Yet, a great opportunity lies ahead. If he gets into the Royal Ballet School in London, Billy's ballet dreams will find a vast stage. Billy stands at a crossroads, choosing his life.
