Ma Bencheng (played by Zhang Fengyi) is an illegal immigrant "escapee" to Hong Kong. He was sentenced to eight years in prison for assault, and after being released, he learns that his elderly mother has passed away and his wife Du Xia (played by Wu Jiali) has filed for divorce. Despairing, he attempts suicide but ends up permanently disabled. Upon returning to the mainland, he finds himself alone and searches for Du Xia, who has since remarried. Du Xia’s brother Du Wei (played by Qin Pei) hires someone to beat him, this once young brother-in-law. Ma Bencheng takes Du’s cousin Xiao Zheng (played by Xiao Junkun) hostage to force Du Xia to show herself.
