The story takes place in the 1980s in America, where Korean-American man Jacob (played by Steven Yeun) moves with his wife Monica (played by Han Ye-ri) and their two children, David (played by Alan S. Kim) and Annie (played by Noel Cho), from the familiar West Coast to the remote and unfamiliar Arkansas. Although Monica strongly opposes her husband's decision, she is unable to resist Jacob's determination and stubbornness, and is forced to go along with him. Life in the wilderness is neither comfortable nor enjoyable, and after the initial novelty wears off, David and Annie quickly begin to long for their old life. Later, the children's grandmother joins them, bringing a touch of liveliness to the family. What Jacob fails to notice is that as he invests more time and energy into developing the farm, the distance between him and his wife continues to grow.
