Yasujirō Ozu leisurely discusses the blessings of the mundane couple’s life with the taste of tea and rice, while Peng Fei lightly presents the nuances of the mother-daughter relationship through the taste of rice pop. A mother working in the city returns to her Dai village in Yunnan, and her daughter's problems mirror those of all left-behind children: she loves to lie, plays on her phone, argues with classmates, goes against her teachers, and even steals money from the temple. The death of a friend brings them closer, as mother and daughter enter the deep, echoing caves, dance before the Buddha statue to mourn the deceased, and connect their souls. The disparities between urban and rural life, the clash of tradition and modernity, and the conflict between development and conservation are resolved through poetic imagery and Zen-like reflections; just boil a pot of oil, fry a plate of rice pop, and blend the sweet and sour of life into a blessing of reunion.
