On the beach, with towering waves, the valiant knight Block (played by Max von Sydow) engages in a game of life and death with the Grim Reaper (Bengt Ekerot). Throughout the chess match, the knight reflects on his life, and his experiences resonate with biblical imagery. Set in the late 14th century during the Crusades, during a time of plague ravaging the European continent and widespread despair. Block once met a couple from a circus; the husband is deeply devout and pious, while the wife is more pragmatic and obedient. Their mutual support makes happiness seem attainable. In the woods, the knight encounters a blacksmith couple; the blacksmith is very rude, and his wife is quite flirtatious, as they perform a comedic routine for passersby, like a pair of ridiculous puppets. Ultimately, after a collective worship and memorial ceremony, the knight and his friends meet the Grim Reaper once again. The past helplessness and fear, anger and doubt evolve into profound questions about life... This film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 10th Cannes Film Festival.
