The story takes place at the end of the 21st century, when countries on Earth finally found a way to coexist peacefully. They worked together to set expansion goals into the vast universe. However, this immense realm is also home to beings from other planets, and wars are inevitable in the struggle for resources. In an unexpected incident, Will (played by Dennis Quaid) crash-lands on an unfamiliar planet in his spaceship, and he is not alone—an alien named Jerry (played by Louis Gossett Jr.) is also stranded there. Initially, Will is very wary of Jerry, even attempting to kill him on multiple occasions. However, as time passes and their understanding of each other deepens, Will discovers that Jerry exhibits wisdom and civilization far beyond that of humans, leading to a solid friendship between the two different species from separate planets.
