The restaurant waitress Xiao Fanzi is a girl who is not satisfied with her job and is full of fantasies. She imagines that one day she can take off her "unambitious waitress uniform" and become a singer or a healthcare worker. However, reality repeatedly shatters her dreams, causing Xiao Fanzi to become depressed and more dissatisfied with her job, venting her frustrations on customers. Zhang Zhi, a university student who grew up with Xiao Fanzi, unwilling to see her sink into despair, often comes to comfort her, explaining that all work is for the service of the people. But Xiao Fanzi thinks Zhang Zhi is speaking in grand terms. Zhang Zhi buys a semiconductor radio for Xiao Fanzi to encourage her to learn a foreign language for revolutionary work, but she finds it meaningless and is puzzled by another waitress, Tong Ying, who devotes herself to studying foreign languages. Moreover, disregarding Zhang Zhi's advice, Xiao Fanzi begins a romance with an aimless young man, Xiao Gu, and stubbornly pursues it. She tells Zhang Zhi that the reason she is so eager to date is that it's difficult to find a partner as a waitress. Later, after facing a series of setbacks in both work and love, Xiao Fanzi finally realizes that Xiao Gu is a talentless youth lacking social morals, while Zhang Zhi is the ideal partner in her heart. However, before she has the chance to express her feelings to Zhang Zhi, she unexpectedly discovers that his girlfriend is her colleague, Tong Ying, which profoundly shocks her. Coincidentally, Tong Ying, through hard self-study in her spare time, has been accepted into night school. Xiao Fanzi, who believes that being a waitress is unambitious and studying foreign languages is useless, is once again strongly shaken in her thoughts. Xiao Fanzi strolls to the seaside, facing the rolling tide and soaring seagulls, her emotions rise and fall, her thoughts are plentiful.
