The film describes the growth process of a boy named Shitou and his good friend Maodi, from the ages of nine to thirty-seven. The entire film is divided into four stages, looking at four women through Shitou's perspective, including the unfortunate girl Lin Laohua, who was imprisoned for communicating with the mainland and reading banned books due to her father; the melancholic girl Huang Wenyi, born into an official family; the blue-eyed girl with a lifelong dream of going to America; and the modern and open-minded girl in red, Sunny. The unfortunate experiences of these women reflect the social landscape of four different periods.
