In East Germany in 1984, society is shrouded under the oppressive rule of the Stasi. Agent Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe) is assigned to surveil playwright Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and his girlfriend, actress Christa (Martina Gedeck). During the surveillance, Wiesler gradually becomes interested in their lives and begins to secretly help them. An article published in the West German magazine Der Spiegel catches the attention of Wiesler's superior, who suspects that Dreyman wrote it and arrests Christa in hopes of extracting her husband's secrets. And it is Wiesler who is interrogating Christa…
