Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a poor young man, travels from Ireland to London to become a tennis coach in hopes of changing his fate. He vows to use his tennis skills to infiltrate the upper class, which has a deep appreciation for the sport. After meeting wealthy playboy Tom, he gets an opportunity, and Tom's sister Chloe (Emily Mortimer) falls in love with him. With the help of her father, Wilton successfully integrates into high society.
Just as he is about to propose to Chloe, Wilton encounters Tom’s girlfriend, American actress Nora (Scarlett Johansson), who is also striving to enter the upper class. Their similar experiences lead to genuine feelings, but Wilton does not abandon his plans for Nora. After achieving his dreams, Wilton reunites with Nora, who has broken up with Tom, and their old flame reignites. Wilton begins to navigate between her and his wife. Soon, Nora becomes pregnant and adamantly refuses to have an abortion, leading Wilton to face the ultimate turning point in his life.
