Cui Mingliang (Wang Hongwei), Yin Ruijuan (Zhao Tao), Zhang Jun (Liang Jingdong), and Zhong Ping (Yang Tianyi) are actors from the Shanxi Fen Yang Cultural Troupe. In the early days of reform and opening up, they led ordinary lives but possessed a relatively rich spiritual world. The deepening reform and opening up exposed them to various new things, allowing them to gain more insight into themselves and embark on different life paths. However, by the end of 1980, they realized that although they had all changed beyond recognition, they were still left with nothing. Compared to coastal cities like Guangzhou, the pace of reform and opening up in a small inland county like Fen Yang has always been slow and heavy, but Cui Mingliang and the others did not recognize this. Their continuous lowering of personal standards in pursuit of money led to a complete disconnection in their spiritual world.
