In a small northern city, a middle-aged music teacher Wang Cailing (Jiang Wenli), who looks unattractive, possesses a natural operatic voice and is quite aloof. Unwilling to live an ordinary, mundane life like those around her, she is determined to establish roots in Beijing. Steelworker Zhou Yu becomes infatuated with Wang, who lends her voice to the radio, and he pursues her under the pretense of wanting to be her apprentice. This inadvertently leads Wang to fall in love with her cousin Huang Sibao (Li Guangjie), who dreams of attending an art school in Beijing but fails repeatedly; however, Huang only regards Wang as a confidante in his troubled spiritual world.
