Mike (Matt Damon) is a second-year law student, but he lost all his savings after a gambling bout with casino owner Teddy (John Malkovich). After being comforted by his friend Kanish (John Turturro), Mike vows never to gamble again. However, he shows off his skills at a professor's poker game, impressing everyone. When his old friend Worm (Edward Norton) gets out of prison, Mike breaks his vow and returns to the gambling scene. To help Worm, he even delays his mock trial internship. Later, his girlfriend Jo discovers evidence of Mike's gambling and breaks up with him, leaving him very upset. Encouraged by Worm, Mike continues to participate in gambling games. However, he soon realizes he has been played by Worm and owes a large sum of money. He confronts Worm, who under pressure reveals the truth: Worm is being threatened by a ruthless creditor. For the sake of their friendship, Worm accepted the creditor's harsh conditions but fell into an even more difficult situation...
