After Martin Scorsese and Todd Phillips (of "The Hangover") both dropped out of directing "The Gambler," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" director Rupert Wyatt took on the remake project. Once the director was set, Mark Wahlberg was confirmed to join the cast as the male lead. Initially, when Martin Scorsese discussed the project, Leonardo DiCaprio was chosen for the lead role, but unfortunately, Scorsese eventually abandoned it. The original "The Gambler" was directed by Karel Reisz and starred James Caan, released in 1974. The film is adapted from Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story and tells the tale of a university professor with a gambling addiction who coerces his students into rigging games to profit in betting. His life spirals out of control as gambling takes over, betting everything he has, ultimately sinking into an irretrievable abyss. The new "The Gambler" features a script written by William Monahan, who won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Departed." Director Rupert Wyatt was previously rumored to be a candidate for directing "Star Trek 3," but there’s currently no news confirming that speculation. Mark Wahlberg is currently busy with "Transformers 4," so "The Gambler" may not start filming until next year, with Paramount producing.
