After Holly's (Sissy Spacek) mother passes away, her father moves her to a small town in South Dakota. There, the 15-year-old Holly meets the 10-years-older drifter Kit (Martin Sheen). The two quickly become lovers. Kit spends his days idle, working odd jobs, much to Holly's father's disapproval of their relationship. One day, Kit breaks into Holly's home, packs her bags, and attempts to take her away, but is stopped by her father. In a fit of rage, Kit shoots and kills Holly's father. Following this, Kit sets fire to Holly's home, creating the illusion that all three have perished in the blaze. Kit drives Holly to a remote forest where they live like primitives. However, they are soon discovered. After killing those who find them, Kit continues to flee with Holly...
