Millionaire George Wade (Hugh Grant) relies on the company's lawyer, Lucy Kelson (Sandra Bullock), for all his daily needs. Lucy is organized but a bit neurotic. She has developed feelings for the smart and charming George. For five years, she has been helping George with everything from wardrobe choices to divorce proceedings, but George has never shown any signs of appreciation. Finally, Lucy decides she must put an end to this. At first, George is reluctant to let Lucy go, but he eventually agrees, with one condition: Lucy must find someone to take her place. After searching, Lucy hires a young, beautiful, and ambitious lawyer named Jane (Alicia Witt). Jane is very interested in her wealthy new boss, and George seems to be drawn to her as well. Now free from George, Lucy prepares for a getaway at sea with her devoted boyfriend. After losing Lucy, George feels as if he's lost a close confidant, and the new person cannot fill the emotional void he experiences. It turns out that what they each needed most was right beside them all along, but they failed to recognize the opportunity; will it be too late to realize it?
