Gideon and the little girl Almerina travel the world earning a living through storytelling. One day, the two spend the night in a cave waiting for dawn to continue their journey. In the middle of the night, they encounter an old bear, and both are startled, beginning to tell a story to distract the bear in an attempt to escape danger. The story's main characters are King Leander of the bears and his son Tony, who live in the mountains. One day, Leander takes Tony to the river to practice fishing, but unfortunately, Tony is caught in a large net. Leander searches everywhere for Tony, becoming increasingly depressed and neglecting state affairs, until one day his ministers warn him that if he doesn't do something, his bear subjects will soon starve. His trusted aides Saltpetre and Theophilus suggest that Prince Tony might be in the human kingdom down the mountain. Leander instantly becomes energized, organizing a bear army to march down to the human kingdom in hopes of finding Tony and gathering some food from humans.
The human kingdom is ruled by a foolish duke, who is obsessed with various hats. His royal advisor, AMBROSE, a wizard capable of magic, reports that the bear army is heading south to attack the human kingdom. The duke, looking through his telescope, sees the large gathering of bears approaching and orders AMBROSE to fend them off. AMBROSE, leading the duke's human army, mistakenly enters the bear army's camp, and at that moment, the human army unexpectedly attacks the bear army. The bears, caught off guard by the hostility, suffer casualties, and Theophilus dies. Leander, heartbroken, organizes a counterattack, rolling snowballs down the mountain, causing the human army to scatter. After the human army's retreat, a pack of wild boars charges at the bear army, at which point the wizard AMBROSE, disguised among the bears, uses magic to turn all the wild boars into balloons that float into the sky.
AMBROSE returns to the human kingdom to inform the duke that the humans have been eliminated, but shortly after, it is discovered that the bear army has not been wiped out; in fact, they have arrived at the human kingdom. The duke, embarrassed and furious, questions AMBROSE and orders him to eliminate the bear army immediately. AMBROSE suggests a way to frighten the bear army. Leander and the bear army approach a trap set by AMBROSE, encounter the deceased Theophilus, but feel no fear. Theophilus tries to reveal Tony's whereabouts to Leander but disappears before dawn. The plan to destroy the bear army fails again, so AMBROSE pretends to provide Leander with information about Tony's whereabouts, leading the bear army into an inn hiding a monstrous cat. After defeating the monster cat, Leander finally sees Tony performing acrobatics in a theater, and the emotional reunion of father and son deeply moves everyone, including the duke, who is also watching the performance. The duke fires a gun at Tony, who is struck and falls. In a fit of rage, Leander kills the duke for revenge. At that moment, AMBROSE uses his final spell to resurrect Tony. Leander then takes the duke's place as the king of humans, leading to a peaceful coexistence between humans and bears. The story ends here, but the old bear in the cave suddenly speaks up, saying that the peace between humans and bears will not last long. Gideon and little Almerina are startled, not expecting the bear to be able to talk.
The old bear continues the story...
Leander becomes king, and AMBROSE, having saved Tony, becomes his royal advisor and Tony's godfather. Because Tony grew up in the human world, he has no bear-like qualities and is much like a human, which greatly displeases King Leander, who begins to reminisce about his carefree days in the mountains. His bear chancellor, Saltpetre, starts scheming to usurp the throne, using all kinds of plots to sow discord between King Leander, Tony, and AMBROSE, even imprisoning Tony and AMBROSE together. After AMBROSE uncovers Saltpetre's treachery, he uses magic to summon a sea serpent. Leander leads the army into battle, and Saltpetre's coup fails, resulting in his capture. The misunderstanding between Leander and Tony is resolved, but ultimately, they sacrifice themselves in the great battle, and before dying, Leander instructs Tony to take the bears back to the mountains.
Tony follows his father’s wishes, and the story comes to an end as dawn breaks. Gideon and little Almerina prepare to continue their journey. Before departing, the old bear in the cave secretly tells the little girl a secret. Gideon asks if the bear they met on the road was Tony, and the little girl smiles and remains silent.
The two arrive at the kingdom, ready to begin their performances, and see Saltpetre begging on the street.
