The story takes place in the year 1921, when Ava (Marion Cotillard) and her sister Magda (Angela Sarafyan) succumb to the neon allure of the bustling city and set off from Poland to seek their fortunes in New York. Along the way, Magda unfortunately contracts tuberculosis, an incurable disease at the time, leading to her being quarantined in a hospital on Ellis Island, causing the sisters, who were like family, to part ways. Upon arriving in New York, Ava discovers that everything is far from the beauty she had imagined; she unfortunately falls into the hands of the pimp Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix) and becomes a prostitute. Ava's life is filled with pain and humiliation, and her only belief is to see her sister again. By chance, Ava meets a magician named Orlando (Jeremy Renner), whose kindness makes Ava realize that he might be her only stepping stone toward a new life.
