An elderly couple, saddened by their lack of children, one day, the husband digs up a root shaped like a human and gifts it to his wife as a child substitute for amusement. Unexpectedly, this root really comes to life, and the couple is overjoyed, naming it Otyko. Otyko is clearly a child with a big appetite, constantly crying for food. To satisfy it, the couple spends all their money, but Otyko, still hungry, ends up eating the family cat. After tasting meat, Otyko refuses any other food and begins to eat the postman, passersby, and even neighbors who accidentally enter their home. The couple is both shocked and afraid, but as Otyko grows larger, they seem powerless to do anything but let it devour them. With no restraint, Otyko takes to the streets, consuming everyone and everything it encounters like a bottomless pit. After gorging itself on cabbages in a vegetable garden, Otyko falls asleep under a tree, until an angry landowner grandmother raises an axe at it...
