This film is adapted from Arnost Lustig's novel "A Girl from Antwerp." In 1973, Willy Fred, a Czech Jewish writer living in New York, learns that the mother of his son's girlfriend was also imprisoned in the Auschwitz concentration camp. He and his son pay her a visit, and Willy reunites with his camp lover, Colette Cohen, whom he has searched for thirty years; Willy's memories are stirred once again... In July 1943, Willy is transferred to the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, and shortly after, Belgian Jewish girl Colette arrives by train. At the train station, Willy instructs Colette, who just got off the train, to identify herself as a seamstress, which spares her from being sent to the gas chamber. Later, Colette is assigned to inspect Jewish clothing for hidden valuables, while Willy secretly delivers food and medicine within the camp during his clothing duties. Their shared fate quickly brings them together in love… The camp commandant, Wajzesek, is extremely cruel, shooting prisoners on a whim and executing anyone who violates the rules on the spot. He sets his sights on Colette, employing both coercion and seduction to possess her… In September 1944, as the Soviet army approaches, the Nazis intensify their "final solution" for the Jews, transferring the remaining Jews to the Gross-Rosen camp. Colette finds herself pregnant during this time. Willy finally discovers a chance to escape hidden in a truck carrying timber, but just as everything is set, Colette fails to arrive on time due to Wajzesek's insistence. For the sake of his beloved, Willy gives up this opportunity. Ultimately, Colette is taken on a train bound for the Gross-Rosen camp, and after her rescue, she gives birth to Wajzesek's daughter, Hannah. In January 1945, Willy encounters the Soviet army while being transported. Wajzesek is killed by enraged prisoners for continuing to shoot escaping inmates. After the war, Willy searches for Colette in vain... The film also depicts a group of people who helped them: Polish doctor David is silenced for knowing about Colette's pregnancy; fierce guard Fritz helps Willy multiple times; Polish female guard Brod, who loves money but secretly assists Colette, is executed for obtaining a pass for her...
