Charlotte (Ingrid Bergman) is a renowned piano performer in a music ensemble, while her daughter Eva (Liv Ullmann) is the wife of a pastor working in a rural community. There is a deep emotional rift between them, and they have not communicated for seven years. After learning of Charlotte's second husband’s death, Eva writes to invite Charlotte to stay with her. Both try to get along amicably, but the past inevitably resurfaces. Eva resents Charlotte for not giving her enough love during her childhood, focusing solely on her career, which distanced her from another daughter, Helena (Lena Nyman), who is severely disabled and can only communicate in unclear sounds. On the other hand, Charlotte is also struggling emotionally due to Helena living with Eva, and the impact of her husband's death weighs heavily on her.
