Independent new woman Yang Zihua (Dong Jie) leaves her home to pursue new ideas and studies sociology at Shanghai University, a gathering place for many progressive youths. There she meets Cai Hesen and his wife Xiang Jingyu, while the then head of the sociology department, Qu Qiubai (Dou Xiao), enjoys a stellar reputation. Yang Zihua feels a deep sense of patriotism from his lectures. Her husband, Shen Jianlong, occasionally visits her in Shanghai, but growing differences leave them feeling distant from one another.
