Ben (Nicolas Cage) is a destitute screenwriter who drowns his sorrows in alcohol. After being fired from his job, he, feeling unaccomplished, sells all his belongings and goes to Las Vegas to begin his plan of slow suicide. He intends to drink himself to death in a matter of weeks. In the bizarre world of Las Vegas, he meets a prostitute named Sarah (Elisabeth Shue). Sarah leads a similarly unfortunate life: she is controlled by her pimp and has tried to escape multiple times without success. Ben and Sarah spend a night together, sharing their struggles as fellow lost souls. They quickly move in together, but Sarah does not stop Ben from continuing to drink heavily. Ben sinks deeper into his own world until one day he finds himself in Sarah's bed with another woman, prompting Sarah to furiously kick him out. Ben, tormented by alcohol, is on the verge of death. He calls Sarah in hopes of rekindling life and love.
