The story takes place in 1941 during the German army's sweep across Europe. It begins with the singing of two poor boys who are about to head to Belgrade, and unfolds from the bus they board. A variety of people get on this bus: a retired soldier, two wealthy individuals, a newlywed couple, and a father-son driver duo. Various unexpected events lead to all sorts of stories, narratives, and activities: being stopped by soldiers at an intersection; a farmer on another road slashing a tire for toll money; encountering a local military unit while resting by a lake, resulting in the requisition of their bus, and upon returning, the driver’s son having been forced into military service; a retired soldier losing his wallet on the road, while the passengers suspect the two impoverished boys and beat them. Ultimately, under the bombing of German planes, the bus burns and capsizes, but the two dirty-faced boys still crawl out of the window and continue to sing... Thus, the difficult journey to Belgrade comes to an end.
