The film is adapted from the novel by Belgian art historian Michael Francis Gibson and is a thriller set against the backdrop of the Renaissance, centered around the famous work "The Way to Calvary" by the Netherlandish painter Bruegel. "The Mill and the Cross" serves as a disguise for an art history lesson in the form of a film, with its initial public debut not in cinemas or film festivals, but in locations such as the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The film transports viewers back to 16th century Holland, where Bruegel uses a biblical story to reflect on the brutality of the Spanish rulers and the resistance of the Dutch people while creating "The Way to Calvary." Lech Majewski combines art historical research with CGI and 3D film technology, attempting to restore the social environment in which the painter created this work, as well as the thoughts and emotions of that time. The exhilaration of standing before a piece of art is precisely what leads us all to mistakenly think it is the so-called creative impulse, isn't it? Notably, Bruegel’s other masterpiece "The Hunters in the Snow" inspired Swedish director Roy Andersson to create his next work, intriguingly titled "A Bird in the Trunk Contemplating Existence," which is expected to debut at next year's Cannes or Venice Film Festival.
