Gabrielle (played by Marion Cotillard) is born into a bourgeois family in southern France. Her parents arrange her marriage to a Spanish farm worker named José (played by Alex Brendemühl). Although José is honest and kind, treating Gabrielle with great care, she has no feelings for him. Their relationship is not the kind of love Gabrielle yearns for.
Gabrielle is diagnosed with kidney stones and goes to a spa for recuperation. There, she meets a man named André (played by Louis Garrel), who is also recovering from injuries sustained in the Indian War. The spark of love ignites between Gabrielle and André, and the two decide to elope.
