The film is divided into two distinct parts. The first part, directed by Mircea Veroiu, portrays the tragic life of a widow in early 20th century Romania. The second part, directed by Dan Pita, tells the story of a bride at a wedding. Mircea Veroiu (born in 1941) and Dan Pita (born in 1938) are the most original filmmakers from Romania, having collaborated on two outstanding films: "Stone Wedding" (1972) and "Golden Soul" (1974). Undoubtedly, both films are among the best ever made in Romania and have received great acclaim worldwide, with collections in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. "Stone Wedding" is adapted from the novel by Romanian writer Ion Agarbiceanu, depicting the living conditions in rural Transylvania in the early 20th century. These stories are filled with a profound tragic shock, a sense of fate that seems to be omnipresent. All of this is expressed in unforgettable cinematography. There is no exaggeration in saying that each shot is a work of art. In the first part, actress Leopoldina Balanuta imbues every movement and gaze with sensuality and wisdom; she knows how to suggest the accumulation of years of life, hopes and despair, stubborn love, and the immense pain suppressed under a cloak of silence. This powerful visual language can only be matched by the tragically naive eyes of Mircea Diaconu (the deserter) in the second part. Among the two directors, Mircea Veroiu favors a contemplative, cold and condensed style, while Dan Pita transforms his part into a vibrant story, filled with ironic moments, expressive characters, and culminates in a painful tragic twist at the end. In any case, "Stone Wedding" is a film worth watching again and again. Each viewing seems to add new dimensions.
