The story takes place in a Polish village in the early 20th century. The innocent and beautiful farm girl Jagna (played by Kamila Urzedowska) blooms like a wildflower, drawing attention and enduring harsh jealousy and ridicule. Jagna has feelings for Anteek (played by Robert Gulaczyk), the son of the wealthy farmer Boryna (played by Miroslaw Baka), but Anteek is already married and has a rebellious spirit, resulting in a strained relationship with his father. For reasons of financial interest, Boryna decides to marry Jagna as his second wife, which directly intensifies the conflict between father and son. After a confrontation, Anteek and his wife and children are kicked out of their home. Meanwhile, Jagna is melancholic, still in love with Anteek, and their feelings ultimately bring them back together. The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Nobel Prize-winning Polish author Władysław Reymont.
