The film is adapted from the 2002 musical of the same name by Jason Robert Brown. The male lead Jamie (played by Jeremy Jordan from "Newsies") encounters the female lead Cathy (played by Kendrick). At that time, he is an emerging writer, and she is a promising actress. The two fall in love, enter into marriage, and enjoy a happy time together. Later, Jamie's first book becomes a great success, and his writing career flourishes; however, Cathy continues to perform quietly in a small theater in Ohio, never finding her chance to become famous.
