Walter (played by Denzel Washington) is a New York subway dispatcher responsible for the coordination and operation of various lines. One day, a group of terrorists hijacks the subway line 123, led by the former American mercenary, Ryder (played by John Travolta), who demands a ransom of $10 million for the release of hostages. Coincidentally, this amount is the upper limit for withdrawals from insurance policies and commercial loans. The subway line 123 races through the tunnel, with multiple transit police killed, the driver taken hostage, and every passenger in fear for their lives. Walter is reassigned due to a work-related failure but is forced into negotiations when Ryder calls him out by name. His honesty in response to allegations of corruption saves the life of a young passenger. As the mayor of New York is on edge about the high ransom and harsh conditions set by the hijackers, he prepares to cut the money to quell the situation, only for the deranged hijacker to suddenly change his mind. As a senior official of the rapid transit authority, Walter decides to swap himself for a hostage and engages in a thrilling life-and-death struggle with the hijackers...
