In 1923, Tibetan herdsman Rolbu (played by Cai Xiangzengren) roams the plateau, surviving by stealing horses. For his child Tashi, Rolbu offers a sacred sheep to pray for blessings. The chieftain’s father dies, and the old grandma admires the kindness of the chieftain's family, while also worrying that Rolbu cannot find peace after death due to his thefts. Rolbu and his accomplices rob gifts sent by the government to the monastery, planning to use the stolen goods to repay vows for Tashi. The robbery is discovered, and the angry chieftain expels Rolbu’s family, leaving Rolbu, his wife Zhuangma (played by Dan Zhiji), and Tashi to wander the grasslands. Tashi's condition shows no signs of improvement and gradually worsens. Rolbu bathes Tashi in holy water and sincerely prays to Buddha for blessings, but ultimately cannot save his child. Soon, Zhuangma becomes pregnant again, and Rolbu and Zhuangma kowtow to repay vows for Tashi, but suffering does not leave them...
