The film is based on the famous Peking opera segment "The Horse Blockade," telling the story of Yang Ye (played by Wu Yue) who dies in Youzhou. After his death, the emperor grants the treasured Nine-Ring Gold Blade to the Yang family, which ends up in the Liao kingdom. In their grief and anger, Yang Bajie (played by Zhang Xintong) and Yang Jiumei (played by Liu Xinlei) travel to Liao to reclaim the treasured sword. On their way back, they meet the stranded Song general Jiao Guangpu (played by Song Tianshuo), and despite their initial conflict, they join forces to escort the sword back home.
