Scholar Zhang Yudan (played by Huang Guoqiang) encounters the daughter of the local governor, Lu Feifei (played by Zhao Xueqin), while she is hunting and falls in love with her. Unexpectedly, Lu Feifei dies suddenly due to excessive killing. The governor buries his daughter in the Xiao Temple where Zhang Yudan is studying. That night, Zhang Yudan offers incense in the mourning hall to express his sorrow, and soon falls asleep on the ground. In the quiet of the night, a series of chilling screams come from the coffin, waking the sleeping Zhang Yudan. A female Daoist enters and tells Zhang Yudan that if he recites scriptures ten thousand times for Feifei’s spirit, the punishments she suffers in the underworld can be lifted. Upon hearing this, Yudan begins to recite scriptures every day without fail. Day after day, Feifei finally appears in spirit before him, and they express their longing for each other. Years later, on a dark and windy night, the messengers of the underworld unexpectedly arrive to take away Feifei, who is lost in happiness, leaving Yudan heartbroken and helpless. The Earth God (played by Liu Jinshan) tells Yudan that the King of Hell has sent Feifei to be reincarnated, and upon hearing this, Yudan feels overjoyed... This film is adapted from the chapter "The Daughter of Lu Gong" in "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio."
