In 1986, the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare commissioned director Roy Andersson to create an educational film on the subject of AIDS to disseminate information about the origins and prevention of AIDS among students and new recruits in schools and the military. However, during the filming, the Health and Welfare Board requested Andersson to discontinue the project. The reason was that they viewed some of the footage and questioned the reliability of the information presented and the style of the film. Andersson did not comply and instead completed the film with limited resources. The film adopts a conspiracy-theory tone regarding the origins of AIDS. In its narrative, the AIDS virus did not originate in Africa and was transmitted to humans by animals, but was created by American scientists in a laboratory and subsequently tested on humans. Today, this film is regarded as an important step in the development of Roy Andersson's personal style.
